October is one of my favorite months to get dressed. The textures get richer, the colors get warmer, and suddenly all those jackets, sweaters and boots we’ve been waiting to wear are back in rotation.
The challenge? Those crisp fall mornings can quickly turn into warm afternoons—and dressing for a 20-degree temperature swing can make getting dressed feel more complicated than it needs to be.
The answer is layering. But great layering isn’t about piling on more clothes. It’s about choosing pieces that work together, create visual interest and—most importantly—can be added or removed throughout the day without sacrificing your look.
Here are five easy formulas to take the guesswork out of fall layering
Formula #1: Tee + Cardigan + Jeans
Start with the simplest pieces in your closet: a great-fitting tee and your favorite jeans. Add a cardigan as your third piece.
The key to making this combination feel styled rather than basic is proportion. If your jeans are relaxed or wide-leg, try a more fitted tee with a slightly cropped cardigan. With a slimmer jean, you can play with a longer or more oversized knit.
Complete the look with loafers, ballet flats, sneakers or clogs and a great belt and bag.
Stylist tip: Don’t overlook the cardigan as an accessory. Draped over your shoulders on a warmer afternoon, it adds color, texture and interest without actually adding another layer.
Formula #2: Button-Down + Lightweight Sweater + Trousers
This is one of those formulas that can take you almost anywhere.
Start with a cotton button-down and layer a lightweight crewneck or V-neck sweater over it. Let a little of the shirt show at the collar, cuffs and hem for dimension.
Pair it with trousers or dark denim and compete the look with loafers, flats or a low boot.
Want a more relaxed version? Skip wearing the sweater and loosely drape it around your shoulders until the temperature drops.
Stylist tip: Keep at least one of your layers relatively lightweight. Bulky pieces that are stacked can overwhelm your shape rather than enhance it.
Formula #3: Tee + Blazer + Jeans (My favorite!)
There’s a reason this combination comes back every fall—it just works.
A simple tee and jeans instantly feel more polished when you add a blazer. Try a classic neutral like camel, chocolate, navy or charcoal, or bring in fall texture with tweed or suede. This Fall you’ll also see lots of plaid blazers that are on trend.
Complete the look with a belt and loafers for a classic look, sneakers for something casual, or an ankle boot for a little more polish.
Stylist tip: Roll or push up the blazer sleeves to expose the layer underneath. That small detail keeps the outfit from feeling too buttoned-up and creates a more effortless look.
Formula #4: Dress + Jacket + Boots
Don’t pack away your dresses just because summer is over.
A midi or maxi dress becomes instantly fall-ready with a denim jacket, cropped utility jacket, blazer or lightweight leather or suede jacket. Cmplete the look with boots, loafers and a leather tote or bucket bag and you’ve extended the life of a piece you may already own.
As temperatures continue to drop, add tights or a fine-gauge knit underneath.
Stylist tip: Pay attention to where your jacket hits. A cropped or waist-length jacket can be especially flattering over a longer dress because it helps define your shape.
Formula #5: Base Layer + Sweater + Lightweight Jacket + Scarf
For those chilly early mornings, think in three layers.
Start with a fitted tee, tank or lightweight long-sleeve top. Add a sweater, then finish with a lightweight jacket—think trench, utility jacket, barn jacket, denim or leather.
A scarf adds one more opportunity for color, pattern and texture and can easily be tucked into your bag when the afternoon warms up. The bandana style triangle scarf is a Fall trend worth exploring with lots of great cashmere, wool and silk colors to choose from.
This formula also gives you options. Jacket comes off first. Then the scarf. And if the day becomes surprisingly warm, the sweater can come off too while your base layer still looks complete.
Shop Your Closet First
Before buying another fall sweater or jacket, take a look at what you already own.
Choose a few favorite base layers, two or three sweaters or cardigans, a couple of jackets and your most-worn fall shoes. Then start mixing.
You may be surprised by how many outfits are already hanging in your closet—you just haven’t put the pieces together in quite this way.
And that’s often where personal styling makes the biggest difference. It isn’t always about buying more. It’s about learning how to make your wardrobe work harder for you.
